After a thrilling final, Katherine had to settle for her third successive Olympic silver, behind China.
Eventually, after a battle all the way down the course, in which the British crew just managed to keep their bows in front, resisting attack after attack, Katherine and her crew-mates Annie Vernon, Debbie Flood and Frances Houghton could not resist the final charge of the Chinese crew next to them to go down by half a length on the line.
Afterwards, Katherine said, “we were very aware of what was going on around us and you do what you can to hold off any attack. Obviously we did everything we could, it just wasn’t enough.” She also said, “we came for the gold, and have made no bones about it, but silver is still a fantastic achievement. All congratulations to China, they deserved it on the day”.
This result means that Katherine is the only British female athlete – from any sport to medal at three successive Games.
